The astrophysics lab courses consist of two core components, which can be credited to different modules depending on the degree programme. For bachelor's students we offer the Astronomical Lab Course and for master's students the Astrophysical Lab Course (listed in Puls as Lab course Astrophysics: Praktikum).
| Degree Programme | Lab Course | Module | Credit Points (CP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Science - Physics | Astronomical Lab Course (Astronomie im Praktikum und kosmische Distanzen, summer semester only) | PHY_534 | 3 |
| Master of Science - Physics | Astrophysical Lab Course (Lab course Astrophysics: Praktikum) | PHY_741b | 2 |
| Master of Science - Astrophysics | Astrophysical Lab Course (Lab course Astrophysics: Praktikum) | PHY-751 | 3 |
Regulations of 2015/16:
The Astronomical Lab Course can be taken as part of the course Astronomie im Praktikum und kosmische Distanzen within the Elective Modules (Field of Specialization) in module PHY_534 - Frontiers in science (6 CP). The course is offered every summer semester.
The Astrophysical Lab Course is available in different versions, as the number of credit points awarded varies depending on the regulations and degree programme. In the “standard version” the lab course carries 3 CP. For 4 CP, an additional piece of work is required, such as a written assignment or an additional observation. If only 2 CP are needed, one observation is omitted, among other adjustments.
Regulations of 2016/17:
The Astrophysical Lab Course can be credited as Lab course Astrophysics: Praktikum within module PHY-751 - Astrophysics II (6 CP), which has the following structure:
The second part of the module is the Astrophysical Seminar for Master of Science Astrophysics, in which students give a 30-minute talk on a topic they have chosen and prepared together with a member of the institute's teaching staff. This talk forms the basis for the assessment of the entire module, while the lab course itself is ungraded. However, passing the lab course is a prerequisite for successfully completing the module.
Note: Please also be aware that a seminar is associated with the lab course (listed in Puls as Lab course Astrophysics), which is not identical to the Astrophysical Seminar for Master of Science Astrophysics.
Regulations of 2019:
The Astrophysical Lab Course can be credited under Elective Modules (Profiling) within Module PHY_741b - Advanced Astrophyics. The module (12 CP) additionally consists of:
If the lab course is taken, the seminars associated with those courses are waived. Since only 2 CP are required for this module, the scope of the astrophysical lab course is smaller here than in the Astrophysics Master.
